![]() ![]() "One thing I regret," says his friend, Stephen King, "is that we never got a chance to collaborate on a song or story." In recompense, King has dedicated his forthcoming novel, Dr Sleep, to Zevon. But when it comes to Zevon, because his music is so highly literate and based on storytelling, the more apt comparisons are with writers. When trying to describe a musician's style, the usual tactic is to compare him to other musicians. He saw things with a jaundiced eye that still got the humanity of things." I always envied that part of his ability and talent." David Crosby also writes in the same book: "He was and remains one of my favourite songwriters. ![]() In Crystal Zevon's 2007 biography of her late ex-husband, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: the Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon, Springsteen writes, " would write something that had real meaning, and it was funny, too. Other fans included Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Ry Cooder, Emmylou Harris, Don Henley, Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Bob Thornton and T Bone Burnett, who played with Zevon on his last album. Zevon was an artist's artist, relatively little known to the public but revered by the best of his contemporaries: Bob Dylan was a great admirer. But it's hardly the whole man and it's a version that doesn't come anywhere near to explaining why his fans and friends loved him and still love him so deeply. This is the Zevon that became the cult legend: the hard-drinking, satire-spitting writer of biting rock'n'roll songs such as Werewolves of London, the song for which he is best known. ![]() And when he was drinking, he was almost unbearable: erratic, violent, emotionally absent, impossible. As a teenager, I was angry that he wasn't there for me as a kid, angry at him for mistreating my mom," says his and Crystal's daughter, Ariel. As a father, he was largely absent until his son and daughter were adults: "He had no language for dealing with children. "He had tonnes of charisma, but when he didn't want people coming up to him, he had charisma in reverse," his ex-wife Crystal Zevon remembers. He was at times intimidating, self-destructive, aloof. But he could also be, as his friends, family and lovers will quickly tell you, a pain in the ass. W arren Zevon, who died a decade ago this September at the far-too-premature age of 56, was a singer, a songwriter and one of the great under-appreciated talents in modern America. ![]()

![]() ![]() With our careless words we can build people up or tear them down. Prov 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death… Our words also have power (and I’m not referring to positive confession here). Gen 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Psalm 33:6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made… It was the word of God that spoke the world into existence and created all living things. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. Sinful speech is a symptom of sin-sickness in our hearts – a sickness only God can cure.Matt 12:33-37 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. They call to us to humble ourselves before the throne room of God, asking Him to purify us from the inside out. But, friends, they are not a call to “try harder” or “bite your tongue.” They are like a mirror to us, revealing the sin lurking in our hearts when we are tempted to be enamored by our own self-righteousness. And if you’re like me, those “speech and tongue” verses will jump right off the page and smack you in the face. If I want the overflow of my heart to be uplifting, encouraging, and healing, my heart must be transformed in His presence.Īs you dig into the book of Proverbs on your own, I highly recommend that you pull out your favorite Bible highlighters or colored pencils (I prefer crayola twist-up crayons!) and mark up those pages with the repeated themes that show up time and time again. Only Christ can transform me from the inside out – and only being transformed from inside out can transform my speech. I cannot will myself to be wise and holy. But to control our speech takes more than just knowing what we shouldn’t do. Proverbs, an intensely practical book, describes for us the practical outcomes of our speech. Jesus gives a sobering answer to my question in Luke 6:45: “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” What is a girl to do? As much as I read what the Proverbs have to say about my speech, why does my tongue trip me up time and time again? Like the prophet of Isaiah long ago, my heart cries – “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips…” (Isaiah 6:5, NKJV) Sometimes I even begin to despair – nothing reveals my fallen humanity like my speech. As a person who finds myself ensnared by my words more frequently than any other aspect of my life, these verses sting and cut. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. – Proverbs 26:21Īs I read through the admonitions about our speech contained in the book of Proverbs, I hear the words of James in my heart: So is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. – Proverbs 20:19Īs charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, Therefore do not associate with a simple babbler. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets They go down in the inner parts of the body. The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels – Proverbs 12:18īut a harsh word stirs up anger. There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts,īut the tongue of the wise brings healing. The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,īut the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things. When words are many, transgression is not lacking,īut whoever restrains his lips is prudent. The Proverbs have a lot to say about our speech. Page after page was brimming with that tell-tale pink highlighting. A few years ago I was working my way through Proverbs, innocently highlighting, when some of the verses began to make their way off of the page and burn into my heart. Depending on what book I am studying, I pick a color scheme to make repeated topics and patterns stand out to me more vividly. I like to color-code when I study Scripture. Digital audio recording followed in 1992 with Cubase Audio, followed by VST support in 1996 which made it possible for third-party software programmers to create and sell virtual instruments for Cubase. Product History Ĭubase was released in 1989, initially as a MIDI sequencer. In 2012, Steinberg acquired the former development team behind Sibelius, following the closure of Avid's London office in July, to begin development on a new professional scoring software named Dorico. Steinberg has won a number of industry awards including several MIPA awards, and accolades for Cubasis and its CMC controllers amongst others. The Steinberg satellite office in London was also opened in 2012. In 2012, Steinberg launched its first iOS sequencer, Cubasis, which has seen regular updates since then. With its new mother company Yamaha, Steinberg expanded design and production of its own hardware, and since 2008 it has created a range of audio and MIDI interface hardware including the UR, MR816, CC and CI series. In 2003 Steinberg was acquired by Pinnacle Systems and shortly after that, by Yamaha in 2004. The company had a revenue of 20 million in 2001 and 130 employees in 2002. A planned entry on the Neuer Markt (New Market, NEMAX50) of the Deutsche Börse failed. Steinberg Media Technologies AG had a revenue of 25 million DM in 1999. It became a very popular MIDI sequencer, used in studios around the globe. In 1989 Steinberg released Cubase for Atari, and versions for the Mac and Windows platforms would follow soon afterwards. The ST had built-in MIDI ports which helped to quickly increase interest in the new technology across the music world. As early proponents and fans of the MIDI protocol, the two developed Pro 16, a MIDI sequencing application for the Commodore 64 and soon afterwards, Pro 24 for the Atari ST platform. The company was founded in 1984 by Karl Steinberg and Manfred Rürup in Hamburg. Steinberg has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamaha since 2005. Steinberg created several industry standard music technologies including the Virtual Studio Technology (VST) format for plug-ins and the ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output) protocol. Introducing DevKinsta, which makes local WordPress site creation a breeze. More competition means things improve faster. After all, that’s why we all use WordPress. In my opinion, it’s always great for users to have more options to choose from. However, once you have your environment in place, it shouldn’t slow you down. It means you’re probably going to be reading through a tutorial like this one to get everything the way you need it. There is obviously more initial setup involved when getting a local development environment running. Pushing to staging obviously involves a few more steps, but in my opinion, it’s a much safer route if you’re dealing with clients. Client calling you (image source: Meme Generator) That way your client isn’t calling you in the middle of the night if your computer restarted or went to sleep. It’s not Local’s fault that’s simply the nature of what happens when hosting something on your machine.Ī much better solution is to push your local site to staging with your hosting provider so that it’s accessible at all times. I’m not sure about you, but if I’m working with a client, I don’t want to rely on my computer being on 24/7. Some solutions like Local do provide a way to make a link public and share it, but the whole problem is that you have to leave Local up and running. ![]() ![]() But what if you’re developing for a client, you might want to share it with them before going live. Obviously, the whole idea behind using a local WordPress development environment is that it’s only located on your machine. ![]() While I think the advantages make it a no-brainer, there are some disadvantages. Disadvantages of a local WordPress development environment Most local environment tools, including DevKinsta, have an easy debug toggle that writes directly to your machine. Many times you have to work around your hosting provider’s implementation of how to view debug logs, or you have to tweak your wp-config.php file to enable debugging. Debugging is fast and easyĭebugging locally can sometimes be easier than on a hosted site. Whether you’re on a plane, in the park, or anywhere else where Wi-Fi might be spotty, this comes in really handy. Offline codingĪnother huge advantage of using a local development environment is that you can code offline. If you’re using a local WordPress development environment, there are no limits. Most hosting providers have limits on the number of staging sites you can have. It also gets rid of any network latency, so caching isn’t even really needed. If you’re testing locally, this relies on the resources of your computer. If you’re bouncing around testing things, this can be frustrating. However, the result is that sometimes the staging site will be slower than the live site. You have to remember that hosting providers have bills too. Either they have caching turned off for development purposes (this is a good thing when testing) or fewer resources (PHP workers, RAM) than the live site. However, the problem behind many of these is that they are sometimes limited. Many hosting providers include staging sites for free these days. Staging sites are typically slower than testing locally You have existing tools like Local from Flywheel and your classic XAMPP and MAMP solutions.īut why even bother with testing locally? Well, there are a few advantages in my opinion. For many, it’s been a part of their regular workflow for years. The idea of a local WordPress development environment isn’t anything new. This functionality is excellent for creatives who may need to access older versions of their files. This previous version then becomes a historical version that you can access at any time. It saves changes to a file as a new version rather than overwriting the existing data. SpiderOak keeps permanent records of every file you share with it. (Image credit: SpiderOak) SpiderOak One File Versioning SpiderOak One’s syncing service is called Hive. Everything you store in the Hive folder is backed up to SpiderOak’s servers and synchronised across all the devices in your account. It’s a valuable addition that not all backup services offer. This functions similarly to a Dropbox folder. SpiderOak will automatically create a Hive folder on your device when you set up your account. This granularity enables you to avoid backing up unnecessary files and saves storage space. Limitations include file size, file creation date, and file type. The platform also gives you very granular control over what files SpiderOak One backs up within the folders you have chosen. You can choose to back up your data in intervals ranging from every five minutes to every two days. You’re also given a great degree of control over the backup process. The program automatically backs up the files that you select from your device, which saves you having to remember to sync files manually. ![]() SpiderOak is a solid backup provider with a feature-rich platform. ![]() |
